California's Limited Liability Company Act is incorporated under the Corporations Code. First enacted in 1996, it was amended to expressly permit a single-member LLC to be formed starting on January 1, 2000.

As of September, 2008, a Professional LLC (PLLC) cannot be formed under California Law.
